Can Rodents Cause Damage To Your Home?

Can Rodents Cause Damage To Your Home?

Posted November 27, 2019

A rat infestation in a house is no joke. These rodents are responsible for the direct transmission of up to 14 diseases and can spread another 15 indirectly. These aren't just any old maladies either, some of them, like plaque and hantavirus, can be deadly.

Rats are responsible for a wide range of other problems in the average household too. They're noisy, icky, and spread fleas.

They can also cause serious damage to your house. The problem is, homeowners often don't know about these issues before it's too late. This is how much harm rats can do to your home.

Rat Damage Can Cause a Fire

The number one problem with rats and mice is their love of gnawing on almost anything. Rodent's teeth grow rapidly, and they'll chew on anything to wear them down. That includes the plastic insulation around electrical wires.

This insulation prevents heat from electricity from spreading to nearby objects. When rats or mice gnaw at that insulation, they expose those hot wires. After that, it's only a matter of time before the hot wire short circuits and creates a spark. The heat could also set something nearby alight.

Rat and Mice Damage Weakens the Structure of Your Home

Of course, plastic isn't the best thing for rats to file their teeth down. Wood and plywood are much better. Not only does gnawing at your walls help keep their teeth in tip-top shape, but it also gives them access to your home and the excellent buffet within.

Rats and mice can wriggle through a hole that as small as 1/2 wide. If you have a small hole in your wall, it's easy for them to chew around it until its big enough for them to get inside.

It's important to rodent-proof your home before they get the chance to invite themselves in.

Few Things are Safe From Rodent Damage

Rats are prolific breeders and can reproduce at a rate of 2000/1 in a single year! To birth and raise their young, they need nests, and nests need lining.

They aren't fussy about how they feather their nests either. Wood slivers are great, paper or board is even better, and plastic will do. In their never-ending quest for reproductive comfort, they'll bite off bits of anything.

Often, important documents or cherished photo albums can fall prey to a rat's voracious appetite for nesting material. They can gnaw through almost anything, including containers of food.

What Can you Do to Eliminate a Rat Infestation in Your House?

Unfortunately, there's little that the average homeowner can do to get rid of rats. Cats and dogs can't kill rats that are hiding out of sight.

If you have the slightest suspicion that there's a rat infestation in your house you need a team of expert exterminators to sort it out.
