3 DIY Pest Protection Techniques

No matter the type of pests you might have had in your home, pest problems are something no one wants to keep around.

Here are some of the most basic ways you can keep your home pest-free. Just a few household- and yard-cleaning tips and some suggestions on products to use can make a significant difference, regardless of the time of year.

Three Simple Guidelines to Keep Pests Away

Follow these steps to protect your home from most pests, including rats, mice, spiders, house flies, fruit flies, cockroaches, and ants.

Keep in mind that major infestations may require professional involvement.

1. Get Rid of Pest Attractions

Outside, there are plenty of things that will attract unwanted visitors. Clean up any fallen vegetation, leaves, berries, fruit, or tree limbs, as these can provide harborages for all kinds of pests to make nests at any time of the year, especially rodents.

Trim shrubs at least one foot away from the siding of the house. Cut the grass short within two feet of the home perimeter, which will help keep spiders and a few other problematic pests away. Trim tree limbs at least five feet from the roof to prevent roof rats and other large mammals from coming inside.

Place the garbage bins at least 20 feet from your home, and ensure the lid closes or seals completely when closed. Place firewood and compost piles on platforms raised at least one foot off the ground to discourage rodents from nesting inside. Place the platforms at least 20 feet from the house.

Row covers are available to protect gardens or fields from some pests. Look for these in your hardware or garden supply store.

Since many pests will enter your home if there are attractive things inside, place all your food in sealed plastic containers.

At night, turn off the exterior lights and cover the windows to keep moths and flies and other flying insects from coming near your house. No pests around the house means fewer spiders, centipedes, and other carnivorous arthropods.

Establish a home sanitation regimen that regularly cleans cracks and crevices. Cockroaches, rodents, and other pests are much less likely to hide out if you keep cleaning the areas they like to stay.

Clean all the drains in your home regularly, shower drains, sinks, and especially the kitchen sink. Ensure your garbage disposal works properly. Use an over-the-counter drain cleaner to ensure all the drains and sinks and other water pipes are completely free of grime or gunk inside them. Plenty of pests like to nest in the grime.

Ensure all water pipes are in good repair and that they don't leak. Leaky pipes or standing water provide essential water to every kind of pest that could invade your home.

2. Eliminate Usual Pest Entry Points

Use silicone caulking, steel mesh or steel screening, copper wire mesh, or steel wool to block the large gaps and possible entry points around your home.

Whether you're looking for an ant nest or trying to reduce rodent entry points, pay close attention to where they are and where they go. Sometimes the usual entry points listed below aren't the only paths inside your home. It's important to be patient and persistent.

The gaps and cracks around doors and ground or basement level windows are a good place to start. Make sure the window screens are in good repair and seal completely. You may consider using steel screens in place of nylon, especially to deter rodent entry.

The cracks and gaps around utility pipes, electrical, gas, water, and so on, are also potential entry points. You can usually fill these with steel wool or caulking.

The cracks around sill plates and foundations are also an important place to protect and seal.

3. Household Products to Control Pests

Most of the following products can be found in hardware or garden supply stores or online. Be careful when applying these, as children, pets, and the elderly could experience harsh reactions if these are applied improperly.

If you continue to have problems after employing these methods, though, your issue might best be resolved with professional help.

Boric acid

This product is used in soaps and detergents. It works well to deteriorate the exoskeleton of many species, like ants and other insects. You can find this in a powdered form at your local hardware store.

Diatomaceous Earth

This works something like glass for anything with an exoskeleton. It cuts the waxy cuticle on the outside of their bodies, which allows water to escape through evaporation and dehydrates them. This is effective against cockroaches, and even termite control.

Traps and Baits

These are available for almost every species, like cockroaches, ants, termites, and rodents. Live rodent traps and unprotected rodent baits are not recommended because a non-professional could easily contract a disease or get hurt very easily.

Soap Insecticide

Yep, grease-fighting soap works wonders as a takedown agent. Mix soap and water together to create a spray and use it against them when you see one scurrying across the kitchen.

Essential Oils

Pure, essential peppermint oil is proven to repel rats and spiders. Consider purchasing an essential oil humidifier and installing it in a problem area.

Cucumber Slices

Surprising, but true, cucumbers' bitterness will repel spiders, moths, and silverfish. Place thin slices on your windowsills, but be sure to replace them often. Mulch thicker slices around your home perimeter to protect against spiders and other potential home invaders.

Natural Enemies

Ladybugs, green lacewings, mantids, spiders, centipedes, and even wasps or hornets are natural predators of many insects, including aphids and spider ticks. Allowing these to patrol your garden or crop fields could be helpful.

Other Over the Counter Products

Chemical pesticides don't have a good reputation because of improper practices during the previous century. But manufacturers and developers are sure to keep pesticides labeled properly, with directions for mixing, use, and proper disposal.

Follow the directions on the label, and you won't cause harm to anything other than the pesky insects.

If you have dealt with a nonstop, ongoing problem, you don't have to look any further. No bugs. Simply better.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
