3 Ways to Find Signs of Bed Bugs

"Don't let the bed bugs bite," is a common expression that's been around ever since bed bug infestations began. If you're curious about bed bug control and want to learn about checking for bed bugs in hotel rooms or at home in McAllen, TX, then you're not alone. We've got practical tips you might want to try out before you sleep tonight.

Bed bugs made a comeback over the last couple of decades, and proper identification is the best way to stop them from spreading and to keep your loved ones and your home in McAllen safe and comfortable.

Keep in Mind

Worrying about Bed Bug Bites | Bed bugs are not as harmful or dangerous as mosquitoes or spiders. The most that could happen to you is an allergic reaction, but most people don't experience any reaction at all. Bed bugs don't carry diseases or toxins, unlike mosquitoes, ticks, and spiders, and they don't have a stinger, unlike wasps and bees.

The most harm bed bugs cause is psychological, and no wonder! No one wants to think of these little vampiric pests crawling on them at night and searching for a blood vessel, which is why performing your own inspection can save you a headache.

Identifying the Wrong Bug | These bugs are often mistaken for carpet beetles, German cockroaches, other small roaches, ticks, or spiders. Don't get confused and misidentify them because there's no time to delay treatments.

Bites are also not a sufficient identification or diagnosis method, because bites can come from a number of insects. "True bugs" are a kind of arthropod that has specific shapes to their mouthparts, and lots of insects leave the same markings after biting.

Always call a pest control company to positively identify bed bugs if you are confused about what pest infestation you have.

Mistreating a Bed Bug Problem | For years during the previous century, every pest was treated with DDT. Pest control has gotten better since then, but always be careful when applying treatments. Most over-the-counter methods don't work against bed bugs at all.

How Do I Know If I See One?

Bed bugs are reddish-brown, oval, and about ¼ inch long, and they have six legs and two antennae. When they have fed recently, they look more reddish and balloon-shaped.

Find Bed Bugs: Perform an Inspection

Look for these common signs of when performing an inspection:

1. Discarded Exoskeletons and Bed Bug Eggs

Bed bug nymphs shed their exoskeletons, called molts, between each of their instar life stages. They need a blood meal before progressing to the next stage. Molts may look like dead bed bugs with a lighter color, or they may look like crumbs.

Sexually mature females can lay 1-3 eggs every day. Eggs are about 1mm long and usually have a white or off-white color.

2. Bug Excretion

Bed bug feces is a much better way to identify bed bugs than bites, but some other insects, like cockroaches, leave similar feces behind. Bed bug excrement looks like little black pepper dots left everywhere they hide (see details below.)

3. Bed Stains

Bed bugs may probe several places on the skin before they find the right place to feed on humans, so those places could leave a bloodstain on the sheets. Bed bugs also defecate their last meal during 1 of 5 feedings. Gross as that is, it is useful to know for identification.

Where Do Bed Bugs Hide?

Common bed bug hiding spots are mostly going to be in the seams of mattresses and box springs, so look under the sheets. Also, check the cracks and crevices of the bed frame. Bed bugs prefer to stay close to the host, but they will hide in other areas as far away as a few yards and up to 20 feet if the population is large enough.

Other common areas include the seams and cracks in wall and ceiling junctions, around wall outlets, and even in drawer runners.

Before you sleep in a new location, such as a friend or family member's house, motel, or hotel, always check these areas for evidence of bed bugs. If you find evidence of bed bugs, ask for a different room, or leave the facility altogether.

Bed bugs can quickly spread from one location to another if they attach to you, your clothing, or your luggage.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
