5 Signs that You Have Termites

Termites cause billions of dollars in damage to hundreds of thousands of homes in the United States every year. They can hide in the walls without detection for 8-10 years!

If you know what to look for, you can save yourself thousands of dollars by catching them before they can do significant damage to your home in McAllen, Texas.

1. Termite Droppings: Frass

Because they eat wood, termite droppings (or frass) look like piles of wood pellets, sand, or tiny wood shavings. Some types of termites open a hole in their tunnels for a dumping ground, much like housekeepers throwing out the trash.

If you find piles of termite droppings, mark the spot, clean up the frass, and watch it over the next several days without disturbing it. If the piles return, you most likely have an infestation.

When the professionals come, you’ll want to mark and take photos of all the signs you find so you can show them and get them up to speed.

2. Termite Mud Tubes

Many common types of subterranean termites rely on the soil to stay hydrated, so they create termite superhighways made of dirt and saliva to allow them to leave their underground colonies without fear of predators or drying out in the sun.

These mud tunnels branch up the sides of walls, cement structures, metal poles, or the vinyl siding of your house.

Pro tip:

Test whether the tunnels are active by breaking one open. Termites with either repair it right away or take a few days to reconstruct it, so watch it for about a week.

If the tunnels are repaired, you definitely have an active infestation. Otherwise, the termites could still be nearby but probably don’t use the tunnel anymore.

3. Termite Swarmers — Flying Termites

Mature termite queens produce swarmers that fly away, mate, lose their wings, and create a new colony elsewhere. This can happen at any time of the year but usually happens in the spring.

Swarmers might gather around a light source like the porch or street lights before dawn or around dusk. But you’re more likely to find the discarded wings around your yard or somewhere inside your house.

Termites versus Ants

Ants send swarmers every year as well, but ants aren’t usually as destructive or difficult to treat as termites. If you can tell the difference, it could save you time and money.

  • Ants have four wings of different sizes. Termites have four wings of equal length.
  • Ants have a thin “waist” that connects the body to the abdomen. Termites have a thick waist.
  • Ant antennae have an elbow bend in the middle. Termite antennae are straight and made up of tiny beads.

4. Termite Damage

Termites eat wood from the inside out, which can make them difficult to discover. But there are things you can do to check for the damage. Termites can eat anything from wall studs to wallpaper, ceiling beams, books, paper, and furniture, so it’s best to check as thoroughly as possible.

Starting with the outer walls of your home, press on the door and window frames, and examine the walls from the bottom up. If the termites have been eating it for a long time, the surface might give a little under the pressure.

You can also listen for a hollow echo by tapping the wood with a heavy screwdriver or wooden dowel. Make sure to check the basement and attic for activity as well.

Keep in mind that termites are one of the only kinds of wood-destroying insects that excavate the wood from the inside out. If you see wood damage on your property, either in the house or somewhere in the yard, it pays to be cautious and call the professionals and show them all the damaged wood you have found.

There are other wood-destroying insects as well. If you’re not sure whether you have an infestation, call a pest professional to help you discover and eliminate the problem.

5. Noises in the Walls

Termites and other wood-destroying insects sometimes make noises in the walls while tunneling. Termite sounds are most easily detected at night when everything is quiet.

Adults usually can’t hear the termite sounds, so if your child repeatedly reports scratching or tapping in the walls, it could be worth a closer look.

Keep in mind that powder-post beetles, carpenter ants, carpenter bees, and wasps can also make sounds while they destroy wood. Mice and rats commonly make noises in the walls as well, so if you hear a pest chewing away, call the professionals to treat the pests.

Professional Termite Killers

Most people’s instinct when they find a pest is to deal with it on their own before calling the experts. There are plenty of safe termite treatments you can use at home, including boric acid, termite bait systems, and food-grade diatomaceous earth.

However, even after everything they can do on their own, some homeowners end up needing to call the professionals anyway, so don’t spend any more time or money than you have to. Look for termite control experts who have the knowledge, experience, and tools ready to help you.

Fox Pest Control can be that company for you. Our Pest Pros aren’t just termite killers. We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
