Fox Pest Control’s McAllen Vole Exterminator Service

Ever walked outside to find that your yard torn up? Do you see multiple tunnels and mounds of dirt?  If this is a constant issue, you might have voles in your yard. There’s nothing worse than trying day after day to get rid of voles with no luck. Luckily, you don’t have to do it yourself. Fox Pest Control can help.

Signs of a Vole Problem

You might already know for sure that you have a vole problem. But here are a couple of the most common signs of a vole problem in McAllen.

Voles are closely related to hamsters, so they like to have defined pathways to follow. These paths snake their way through fields and nearest their favorite plants to eat. Furrows are typically 2 inches wide and may feature many branches over a wide area.

Burrow Holes

Since they like to live underground, you may see a hole a couple of inches in diameter. These burrow entrances are found in the middle of lawns or near tree roots.

Voles are much more willing to appear in the open than mice. You may even see one scurrying through the grass during the day.

What You Need to Know About Voles:

  • Voles are tiny, fast animals that are closely related to lemmings and hamsters.
  • Like moles, voles tunnel through the ground and destroy your yard and garden.
  • On top of being bad for your plants and garden, voles carry diseases like rabies and tularemia through their urine and feces.
  • If you come into physical contact with vole waste, consult a doctor.

Helpful Vole Prevention Tips:

  • Remove hiding places like wood piles and debris.
  • Cut grass short.
  • Rake up or gather grass clippings that are near trees, the home foundation, bushes, or other plants where voles could hide

Vole Control FAQ

What are voles?

Voles are small, energetic mammals that look similar to mice. In fact, they are often called field mice or meadow mice in North America. However, voles are more closely related to lemmings and hamsters than mice.

Why damage do voles do?

For the most part, voles are considered a nuisance pest because they tear up the lawn, eat the garden, destroy valuable plants, and make tunnels throughout the yard.

What is the difference between moles, voles, mice, and shrews?

  • Moles
    • Live all their lives underground
    • Eat insects, worms, grubs, bugs, etc.
    • Use their spadelike forepaws for digging.
    • Have pointy nose
    • Have tiny eyes and ears that are almost invisible
    • Are not rodents but a type of insectivorous mammal
  • Shrews
    • Are not rodents but another type of insectivorous mammal
    • Have tons of energy that they use to chase their prey
    • Eat insects like beetles, ants, grasshoppers, etc.
    • Live in the abandoned tunnels of other animals
    • Have brown or gray fur
    • Have long, and pointed noses
    • Some shrews have venomous bites
  • Mice
    • Are omnivores and will eat anything, including human and pet food
    • Have large, round ears
    • Have slightly rounded noses
    • Tails are longer than their body and have little hairs
    • Have brown or gray fur
    • Are timid and prefer to stay hidden — they hate running into the open
    • Have a strong instinct to chew on things to wear down their front teeth, which never stop growing
  • Voles
    • Only eat plants
    • Have small eyes and large ears
    • Are more closely related to hamsters and lemmings than mice
    • Are much stockier than mice
    • Have brown, reddish, or black fur
    • Tail is shorter and hairier than mice tails
    • Aren’t as timid as mice and are more willing to run out into the open

What do voles eat?

Voles are mainly herbivores, although some species are omnivores.  Voles will stick to eating plant parts, including bulbs, seeds, roots, stems, and leaves.

This is why it’s especially important to keep your yard clean of plant debris, like grass clippings for example.

Are voles dangerous?

Voles can spread diseases, including:

Toxoplasma gondii,
Trypanosoma microti,
